How to Create Relevant Alerts

Updated this week

A common challenge in media monitoring is avoiding an overflow of irrelevant mentions. With our search interface, you can easily adjust your search criteria to get more relevant results. This guide will help you optimize your alerts using the right features.

1. Exclude Words

Use the "Exclude terms" field to filter out unwanted mentions.

Example: If you want mentions of the animal "jaguar" but not the car brand, add terms like "car*" in the "Exclude terms" field. This helps narrow the results to what’s relevant for you.

2. Nearby terms

Use the “Nearby terms” field o add specific words that should appear close to your search term.
Example: If you're searching for “school*” and only want results related to politics, guide the search by adding words like “politic*”, “government*”, “reform*”, or “law*” as nearby terms. This helps focus the results on the right context.

3. Spelling variations

Add synonyms, alternative spellings, or even hashtag versions.
Example: The word “webshop” can appear in many ways – such as "web shop" or "web-shop". To make sure you catch them all, add each variation as a separate keyword.

Tips for better results

  • Use an asterisk (*) at the end of a word to capture multiple word forms.

  • Refresh the alert after making changes to test your results.

  • Don’t be afraid to experiment - it’s the most effective way to sharpen your monitoring!
